Overview

An Invitation to the Underground is an exhibition by artist Kika Suzuki, composed of three elements: an exhibition of ceramic works, workshops, and a café performance. Through ceramics as a process, the exhibition invites visitors to experience and reflect on their relationship with soil—the earth itself.

Suzuki’s practice, which she describes as process-based ceramics, approaches ceramics as a documentary medium. Her work explores layered relationships between earth and city, soil and people, life and death. Through the intense energy of fire, ceramics become a site where something is preserved while something else is inevitably lost.

Works and Programs

The exhibition presents new works alongside reconstructed past works. These pieces emerge from quietly accumulated experiences: time spent during monthly visits to her grandmother’s house, walks with an aging goat, encounters with sheep farmers, and the steady rhythm of daily life shaped by handling clay.

In parallel with the exhibition, Suzuki held the ceramic workshop “Pinching the Earth,” inviting participants to directly engage with soil through hand-building processes.

The café performance Soil Café: Mother Sheep, A Journey Through the Gut served wild herb tea and herbal liquor in vessels fired using sheep dung, creating a space where digestion, transformation, and the circulation of matter could be contemplated through taste and touch.

概要

本展覧会「地中へ向かうインビテーション」は、作家・鈴木きかによる作品展示、ワークショップ、カフェパフォーマンスの三部構成からなる展覧会である。
陶芸というプロセスを通じて、土＝大地との関係性を身体的・感覚的に捉え直す場として構成された。

鈴木きかが制作の軸としている「プロセスの陶芸」は、大地と都市、土と人、生と死といった関係性が複層的に交差するなかで、火という高温のエネルギーを媒介に、何かが残り、同時に何かが失われていく過程そのものを記録＝ドキュメントとして捉える実践である。

作品とプログラム

本展では、近作とあわせて過去作品を再構築した作品群を展示した。
それらは、月に数回訪れる祖母の家で過ごす時間、老いたヤギとの散歩、羊農家への訪問、粘土に触れながら淡々と積み重ねられる日常の感覚から掬い上げられたものである。

また、会期中には陶芸ワークショップ 「大地をつまむ」 を開催し、参加者が手びねりを通して土と直接向き合う機会を設けた。

あわせて行われたカフェパフォーマンス
「soil café：マザーシープ、腸の旅」 では、羊のフンを焼成した器を用い、野草茶や薬草酒を提供した。
味覚や触覚を通じて、消化、変容、物質の循環について思考する場が立ち上げられた。
